Indian American Professors Honored With Carolina Teaching Awards

Snehalkumar “Neil” S. Gaikwad, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, and Montek Singh, a professor in the same department, were selected for the award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to undergraduate education.

Gaikwad, who joined UNC in 2021, teaches courses on machine learning and artificial intelligence. He has been praised for his ability to make complex technical topics accessible and for fostering an inclusive classroom environment.

Singh, a faculty member since 2001, specializes in embedded systems and digital design. He has mentored numerous undergraduate researchers and has been instrumental in revamping the computer science curriculum to incorporate hands-on learning.

The Tanner Award, established in 1952, is one of the university's highest honors for teaching. Recipients are chosen based on student evaluations, peer recommendations, and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate mentorship.

Both professors will be formally recognized at the university's annual Faculty Awards Ceremony in April.
