Indian American Entrepreneur Launches Culturally Blended Flor de India Hotel in San Juan

Preeti, an Indian American entrepreneur, opened Flor de India this month after a two-year restoration of the historic building, which had served as a private residence and later a guesthouse. The property now features 12 guest rooms, each decorated with hand-carved wooden panels, brass accents, and textiles sourced from Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The hotel's design deliberately pairs the original Spanish colonial facade, with its arched doorways and wrought-iron balconies, against vibrant Indian motifs, including intricate mandala patterns painted on ceilings and custom-made furniture from Indian artisans. Preeti said she wanted to create a space that honored both her heritage and the building's Caribbean history.

Guests can dine on a fusion menu that blends Puerto Rican staples like mofongo with Indian spices, such as a curry-infused chicken dish. The property also offers a rooftop lounge with views of the old city, a plunge pool, and a spa that incorporates Ayurvedic treatments.

Preeti, who moved to the United States from India two decades ago and built a career in hospitality management, said the project was a personal milestone. She plans to hire locally and collaborate with San Juan-based artists for rotating exhibitions in the hotel's common areas.

Flor de India is now accepting reservations, with room rates starting at $250 per night. The hotel is located in the historic district, within walking distance of the San Juan Cathedral and the city's famous colorful streets.
