Indian American Entrepreneur Launches Culturally Blended Flor de India Hotel in San Juan

Preeti, an Indian American entrepreneur, opened Flor de India in Puerto Rico's capital after a two-year restoration of the historic building. The hotel, which is adults-only, features 12 rooms that combine the original Spanish colonial structure with Indian craftsmanship, including hand-carved wooden panels, brass accents, and textiles sourced from Rajasthan.

The property, originally a private residence, had fallen into disrepair before Preeti acquired it. She worked with local preservationists to maintain the building's facade and interior details, such as arched doorways and tile work, while introducing contemporary amenities. Each room is named after a flower from India, and the hotel's courtyard now includes a small lotus pond.

Preeti, who moved to the United States from India two decades ago, said the project was a personal tribute to her dual heritage. She partnered with artisans in Jaipur and Mumbai to create custom furnishings, and with San Juan-based craftsmen for restoration. The hotel also offers a fusion menu at its on-site restaurant, blending Puerto Rican and Indian flavors.

The launch comes as San Juan's tourism sector rebounds, with boutique hotels gaining popularity among travelers seeking intimate stays. Flor de India is currently accepting reservations for stays beginning next month, with room rates starting at $250 per night.
