'We Don't Advertise': Indian-Origin Philanthropist Shuns Spotlight After Historic $5.5M Texas Hospital Donation

Sunita Agarwal, who with her husband Brij made the largest gift in the hospital's history, said the couple prefers to keep their philanthropy private. 'We don't advertise,' she told hospital officials, adding that they are uncomfortable with the attention the donation has drawn.

The $5.5 million contribution to St. Luke's Health–Sugar Land Hospital will fund the expansion of the hospital's emergency department and the creation of a new intensive care unit. The Agarwals, who have lived in the Sugar Land area for over three decades, said they wanted to give back to a community that has supported their family and business.

Brij Agarwal, an engineer by training, built a successful manufacturing company in the region. The couple has a history of supporting local causes, including education and cultural organizations, but have largely avoided public recognition for their gifts.

Hospital administrators described the donation as transformative, allowing the facility to serve a growing patient population with upgraded facilities. The Agarwals, however, declined to be featured in the hospital's promotional materials, requesting that the focus remain on the patients and staff who will benefit.

The couple's decision to remain in the background stands in contrast to the typical fanfare surrounding major philanthropic gifts. Sunita Agarwal said simply, 'We don't like to discuss it,' emphasizing that their motivation is to help others, not to seek praise.
